Honestly, I would wait it out at first. You can check this website for more info on if the MC services are down: http://xpaw.ru/mcstatus/
If, for some reason, you cannot connect to any of those services while that website says they are working fine, I would consider a connection problem on your side. Perhaps a firewall/antivirus? If your 'girlfriend' has any other computers at her house, tell her to try it on that computer.

Another good question: Did your girlfriend allow access to Java when the computer asked. (It usually asked right after you click on the 'Multiplayer' button). It will only ask once and it usually asked the first time you use Minecraft on that PC after an install. If she didn't allow Minecraft access.. Well that can cause some problems.

I'll see if she can try from her family computer. If it doesn't work there, I'd assume it's something wrong with her internet connection in general, but that wouldn't make much sense to me as her internet connection is perfectly fine in every other aspect outside of Minecraft. As for the prompt from java, from what I can recall, there was none.
As I said in my original post, I checked the servers, they were up at the time we first tried playing and they were up just now when I was messing with it again. I also disabled the firewall momentarily, to check if that was the issue. She uses 360 security, which I've heard mixed reviews on, but it hasn't been an issue for her. I can play around with that, but I don't think that's causing the issue. :/
I messed around with a variety of settings and finally got it working, not sure exactly which tweak fixed it, but at least she can play.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
For future reference for others who might be having the same problem, what did you change exactly? I know you mentioned you don't know which 'tweak' fixed it, but any info you could give would be helpful.

Hello!
My girlfriend is having trouble connecting to any Minecraft server. She keeps getting a message that says:
"Failed to connect to the server
Failed to login: The authentication servers are currently down for maintenance."
She was able to connect yesterday and has not altered her computer in any way since.
Here is what we have tried:
I can't think of anything else to try. Any advice?

Curse PremiumYou could also check to see if the windows firewall is blocking it. I found mine under: 'Java(TM) Platform SE binary'
Windows tutorial on that http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/communicate-through-windows-firewall#1TC=windows-7

ModeratorNorton AV does sometimes mess with minecrafts login and server joining processes, try removing norton from her computer and see if she can then login
