I've been working on a map for Minecraft for a while, it's been around a month since I opened the map, when I did today, my client crashed, so I restarted it. Second attempt it loaded but something very unusual had happened to my map, parts of the map seemed to be reverted to the default seed, or random. The map was still there, but big chunks were simply wrong. I don't really know how to describe it more than that, it was as if several hundread years had passed and I was now at the ruins of my map.
This was a single player map that was not connected to the internet so I'm confused as to what on earth is going on

Hello,
What version were you using? If it was the latest snapshot then this is likely to happen.
