I've tried several mob farms and none spawn like any mobs (maybe 1/2 every 10 mins) on SSP or SMP.
They are light level 0 and all caves are lit. And the server render is at 12! Mobspawning is confirmed on. Difficulty is normal. I am standning withing 24 and 32 blocks below both (does that only apply X and Z? I've been treating this situation like it applies for Y as well). It is built is the sky over the ocean and entities are only ever 50 or 60.
