Hello there! I'm at my wit's end and I'm convinced that I'm clearly making some huge oversight, because I cannot get anything but resourcepacks to work. Forge won't load any mods (any version. 1.8, 1.7.2/10, I just can't get anything to show up even if it's compatible, for any profile I've tried.) when I can get it to run at all, Shaders Mod (I made sure to install it!) runs but no shader I've tried will actually do anything to the game. (I've tried a ton of them -- Slidur's, TooMuchEffects, some others I don't remember offhand.) Resource Packs work just fine, at least, but those are all I can get to cooperate.
I've been trying to get mods and shaders to work for three days and I've even clean-installed Minecraft a few times to see if I maybe corrupted a file or something, but it's just not making any difference. Forge won't recognize any mods, shaders don't do anything except, sometimes, give an error if I got the filestructure wrong.
I've watched every tutorial I can find, combed google results to try new suggestions, but nothing is improving my issue. I just can't get things to snap together and run flawlessly like it seems to happen in youtube videos, and I'm apparently blind to the gross oversight I'm committing to cause things to fail so spectacularly. I had to fight just to get Forge itself to actually load, because for a while I couldn't get any version to display the "Mods" button at all. Now that I do have it...... it still isn't recognizing any mod I place in the mods folder. I even went so far as to change the java version Minecraft uses (when I was seeing if 1.7.2 would work with anything and the launcher wouldn't work, I am back to the most current version now) to no avail. I have literally tried so many things that listing them all would take an hour, I've tried every combination of every compatible launcher-mod-shader-everything known to man (and tried each individual thing separately too!) and just. Nothing. I get base Minecraft and that's it. And Minecraft is lovely, but I want to use mods. It would be a huge step forward if I could even get shaders working.
I've never made a help thread before so I'm sorry if there's no useful information in here. But I just don't know what to do anymore, I have tried literally everything and all the information out there is contradictory and version-specific and everyone seems to have something different to say about what the problem is and how to fix it. I'm quite comfortable tinkering with things, modding other games, I have no problem with troubleshooting most of the time. But with Minecraft I'm just stuck. Everything about how this game works is backwards and I don't know what to do anymore because I've tried so many things that now I'm just lost. Please spare a this idiot a helping hand.
OS: Win7 Home Premium (it's awful but you learn to live with it...)
(So nowhere near the best system in existence, but decent enough that I should at least be able to get SOMETHING running, the base game itself runs just fine.)
(I would post error logs, but I don't get any -- Forge straight up doesn't "see" the mods, let alone try to load them. Even the most recent version of shadersmod won't install via Forge -- I used the other method.)
If you need more information, I will do my best to provide it. I apologize for the terrible dearth of information in this thread and my clinical incompetence.
@sazrocks Yes! They're in the mods folder/the shaderspack folder as needed; I even went back and double-checked (and then some) to make sure I wasn't crazy. No luck, unfortunately, but thank you. ^-TT;

What mods did you try to put in the mods folder? Shaders Mod I know doesn't appear in "Mods" menu. If you're using other mods, are you by any chance using firefox as your main browser? Firefox has a fun habit of zipping downloads, which can stop forge from seeing them if there in a .jar.zip or .zip.zip format.
Also, a much easier way to do this would be to use MultiMC. It is very nice for easily setting up modded clients.
@TheGreatGhoulHater aah sorry for the late reply, it was a busy day yesterday for me.
I've tried a bunch at this point, but some in particular would be Xaero's Minimap, which I was hoping to get running because I suck and get lost often |D;
But so far, none that I've tried have shown up in the Forge mod menu. I've tried them when they're zipped, I've tried unzipping them, I've tried standalone .jar's, I've unzipped and /re/-zipped them because that apparently worked for one person, but no luck so far.
As for ShadersMod, I do have it installed -- it will say "initializing shaders" if I load a shaderspack -- but it either gives me an error that it couldn't load the files (if I got the directory wrong, which I did my first few times,) or it will just... not do anything. It says they've loaded and there is no graphical change even if I stare directly at the sun. I was concerned it might have been that my system is a bit old, but even the less-intensive ones don't seem to work for me.
And no, but it was a good suggestion -- I'm on Chrome for now.
I'll see if MultiMC helps though, thank you much! I appreciate your time immensely.
EDIT:// Okay, I've finally got some mods to start working! Progress!! But shaders are still giving me trouble with MultiMC (nothing works with the default launcher) and looking at the log I can see why. How do I tell shadersmod to use my Nvidia card and not the integrated one? I'm so grateful I finally nailed down what it was doing.
I'd never have found the issue if it wasn't for the output log from MultiMC, so thank you to TheGreatGhoulHater ^w^
EDIT2:// I figured that part out, but I'm still hitting a snag. I now have everything behaving together, but the log still shows that ShadersMod won't load shaderpacks.

I tried a few different ones but none of them fixed the pack that the game graphics are currently broken. |D;;
But I mean, at least I've made some progress. If anyone has any suggestions, they will be appreciated.

Thank you for your time.
Make sure the mods folder you are putting the mods in is in the directory specified in edit profile.
