Alright, so, I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but this has been such a really huge issue for me. I've always sat by and just let it happen since I got the game, but now, it's just way too annoying. Whether it's on a server, or in single player mode, I constantly lag. Only times I don't lag is when I look up, sometimes when I look down, and other times when there is nothing rendering in front of me.(obviously) Now, again, I'm not fantastic with technology, but from what I've looked into, I should be able to run it no problem. I have 4GB of RAM, almost nothing running in the background either. I'm not sure what's the issue, and I've allocated 2GB of RAM to Minecraft....anyone think they can help me out with my problem? I really want to start enjoying Minecraft lol
PS: I'm completely unmodded, except for Optifine(though I don't really consider that a mod)
Also, I'm not entirely sure where I could get all of my system specs to show you (should you need them) So, mind telling me where I should copy and paste this? I'm running a Dell Vostro 3400 (according to Dell, it's the early 2010 version)
I guess I should also add that I'm using the latest version of java, and I've tried running on all different types of Minecraft versions.

I believe I did that correctly! Hope to hear more soon!
Don't listen to the trolls. You've allocated enough.
What processor do you have? To find it, click on the Start Menu, right click on Computer, and then click Properties. Post a screenshot of the window that shows up. You can use FRAPS or prtscr+ctrl+c. Mine looks like this:

See, I've already put all of my settings down. My issue is the extreme lag I get whenever I'm near lots of buildings and/or large structures. Out in the wilderness and whatnot, I'm completely fine. SOmetimes I lag when mining, but other than that, I'm fine.
I also have this. Those bars on the left sometimes spike to the top a lot. My average FPS when looking at these buildings and stuff is about 5 FPS. Otherwise, when I leave the area or something, I average at 20-60 FPS

As much as I hate saying it, you need to turn down your render distance. Bring it down to 2 chunks, and then slowly raise it until you go below a constant 30FPS. I render at 4 chunks, and my computer is worse than yours. re you on NVIDIA graphics, or Intel integrated? Also, close absolutely everything when you play. Minecraft is a CPU hog.

At the moment, i render at 4 chunks too. I brought it down to tiny before, and it helps for like 3 seconds, then the lag starts up again. I've got the Intel integrated, and it's to my understanding that this card sucks lol. And on the note of closing everything, i close all the things I don't need when I start up my computer: Skype, Chrome, Steam etc.... But there is still a bunch of processes that I don't know what they are for. But the CPU stays at around 20 after I do all of that. Then I run Minecraft, and the CPU shoots to 70-90
There is a branch of svchost.exe that Chrome uses, it takes up about 100MB, usually around 88. End Task to that, I've found that that process interferes with Minecraft.
I've included an image of everything that Windows needs to be stable. Ignore the black bars and the chrome.exe. Everything that you have needs to go out the window (lol) that's not in the image,
Besides the usual, update Java.

Intel GPUs definitely suck. So the game becomes unplayable when near large buildings, however anywhere else is playable? If that's the case, only real advice I can give you is upgrade really, or install Optifine and play around with the settings. Intel GPUs are not designed for gaming, most games released up to 10 years ago flat out refuse to run on them. My old laptop had an Intel GPU and on a modded game with about 130-150 mods it ran at 30-40 FPS in a newly generated world, as I'd get a base and add machines that'd drop to about 20-30, and with an end-game base it'd be as low as 10 in some cases.
Dropping your render distance can improve performance greatly, however if it gets worse in a matter of seconds I'd say that isn't solely a graphics issue. Could be a combination of graphics and your CPU becoming overwhelmed.

Thank you guys. I think i'll eventually get a new laptop. It sucks because I'll probably have to shell out 600 or more, but I guess it'll be worth it in the end. Again, thank you!

If you can go for a desktop. Desktops are by far cheaper, you can find a desktop worth a couple hundred cheaper than a laptop of equivalent power, or a desktop that is the same price that overpowers a laptop of a similar price by a lot. And are upgradable, easy to repair and just better. Unless you like portability.

I believe I did that correctly! Hope to hear more soon!
Did I do it correctly?
BUMP:angry:
I have 4GB in total for ram, and Minecraft should only need 2...
Don't listen to the trolls. You've allocated enough. What processor do you have? To find it, click on the Start Menu, right click on Computer, and then click Properties. Post a screenshot of the window that shows up. You can use FRAPS or prtscr+ctrl+c. Mine looks like this:
i'd turn down settings, like turn clouds off. put your render down abit. and see how much fps you get.
Also, can I get the name of your GPU? I've got an Intel Mobile 4 series.
Another thing: The reason why only 3.8 of your 4 GB is because 200MB is reserved for your GPU. You can probably change that amount in Dell's BIOS.
http://www.pvladov.com/2013/10/increase-intel-hd-graphics-dedicated-video-memory.html
