The two computers in the house have been upgraded to Windows 10 and I guess I should have checked to see the impact on Minecraft first. It appears that Win 10 doesn't support port forwarding or whatever method was used to play LAN games in the house. The new Win 10 Minecraft seems to be a cheap port for a tablet, not able to access current maps and just downright awful. Are there any work arounds to get LAN games working again (e.g. for unmodded 1.8.8)?
Port forwarding is done via the router and is OS independant, but shouldn't need to be done on LAN as port forwarding is for when someone is outside of your LAN
Okay, not sure why LAN isn't working then. Both systems are using 1.8.8. Both PC's are connected via homegroup so can see each other on network. I've added Minecraft to both Firewalls. It worked fine last week under Win 7 so not sure with Win 10 what changed to block them.
I'm not using any AV aside from what Win 10 has (Defender, Firewall). The strange thing is I can navigate to the other computer on the network and access files (homegroup). It is just the Minecraft LAN that is no longer working. I've gone on both system's firewalls to allow the program through.
I've created world, opened to LAN and had other computer try to direct connect to port (e.g. 45919). That is not an actual port number, just an example. I just went back into both PC's firewall to remove all inbound and outbound rules for Minecraft. That didn't reset anything.
Also, not sure if this helps, but both systems can access Minecraft servers.
perhaps it's windows 10 not allowing java to accept both incoming and outgoing connections on one or both PC's. I know when I first booted minecraft java (sounds weird not calling it PC version) after upgrading it asked me what to do with java, allow incomming and outgoing connections on public and/or private networks. that MIGHT be the issue on one of them. check the windows firewall on both to make sure java is allowed access.

InuYasha, you win a prize! That was it exactly - I added Minecraft to the firewall but didn't even think about Java now that Win 10 doesn't support it. Once I added that on the firewall, LAN connection worked again. Thanks very much!

Moderatorit could be the win10 firewall is being more strict, your antivirus setting maybe blocking it (what AV do you use?)

Moderatorhave you tried to direct connect rather than relying on the game to pick up the server?

Any other ideas?
