So I finally gave in and bought Minecraft (for the kids, wink, wink). I just wiped and reloaded my 5 year old laptop. I figured that would be better as it was getting bogged down with old work stuff.
Just downloaded and installed Minecraft this morning, and it crashes on the Building Terrain splash screen. I've updated the video drivers and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the 64-bit version of Java. I'm not sure what else could be causing the problem.
Crash Log is shown below. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

This issue is most commonly caused by a broken installation of Avast!
free edition Anti-virus software. A reinstallation of Avast! and a
reboot usually fixes it.
McAfee anti-virus software (and derivatives) are also know to cause
this issue, and currently the only known solution is to uninstall this
software to correct the problem.

I'm no expert but a five year old anything in the computer world is not worth keeping.
