I hate the new Minecraft launcher, and I can't figure out how to download mods on it. Heck, it even generates a bunch of crap in the launcher's location, and it can't even check if it's in it's own folder. I checked the launcher history, and it seems that the launcher version 1.5.5 was before Microsoft did anything to it. Where can I find a download for the original, unmodified Launcher 1.5.5?
Thanks,
SwagMasterIV
Edit: I don't know if 1.5.5 is a version that looks like the current one. I've never seen it, but I'm just assuming that 1.5.5 was the old layout. If 1.5.5 is the old layout, give me the earliest version that looks like the current one.
What do you mean you can't download mods? I use Optifine (without forge installed) fine. And I've used forge before with the new launcher and they work fine.
Since there's no official mod API or anything for Minecraft, that's why you can't install mods straight from the launcher. Just put the forge mods in the /mods/ folder like usual
I'd recommend not, and just use the current one, because you can install mods.
I think by "old launcher" they mean the launcher that was used up until 1.5.2; your link is for the current version of the launcher that doesn't come with its own built-in Java runtime, which otherwise works exactly the same; in fact, I have it use the Java 7 installed on my computer since it runs better for me than their version does (or the full Java 8 release, though I haven't tried it with the more up-to-date versions).
Even if there is a download for that launcher I doubt it even works anymore; e.g. lets you log in, and you can't play anything later than 1.5.2 even if it did. In any case even with non-Forge mods I find it very easy to use mods; even easier in fact (well, I never actually used mods prior to 1.6) since I can just copy and rename the folder/jar/json for the version, then select it in the profile editor - before you could only play one version unless you used a third-party launcher like Magic Launcher.

This isn't the launcher I'm looking for. I'm only assuming 1.5.5 looks like the current version, but I'm not sure if it is. If this is 1.5.5, then I'm looking for just the earliest version that looks like the current version.
As far as I know, the version you are talking about worked exactly the same as the current one, which is also known as the "1.6+" launcher since it was released for that version and has been pretty much the same ever since with updates now and then, particularly the ability to play older and/or modded versions and make separate profiles.
Also, the 1.5.5 version you mention is marked as a "test version" so is likely not the exact version you were thinking of, I'm not even sure if they released it, or for general use (I seem to remember it updating from 1.5.3 to 1.6.11, which are the last and first non-test versions before the changes to use a built-in version of Java; after updating it told me that I was running an outdated version of Java and recommended the "new" launcher with its built-in Java, and after I updated to get rid of the notice the launcher was the same as far as I could tell).
Note also that despite wild claims Microsoft has NOT done anything at all to Minecraft; it is all still under the control of Mojang. If you have some specific mod-related issue you should ask for help in the modified client support section, including a description of the exact issue you are having, which as far as I can tell is simply caused by not having Forge (for most mods) installed since the game and launcher have never had any sort of mod support beyond resource packs (in some ways those are mods, though mods usually refer to changes to code).
If there is an issue installing Forge it may be because you don't have the version it needs installed yet; for example, to install Forge for 1.7.10 you have to first run 1.7.10, which you can do so by editing your profile to use that version, then play it once so it downloads the files. Keep in mind that mods will only work for the version they were made for, and you should only download them from trustworthy sites (e.g. these forums).

This is the launcher that my download link goes to:
which is different than the current one as far as I know :P.
I'm a little confused though. Now the OP said that he wants a link to an earlier version of the current launcher.

I don't think it's possible since the current launcher auto updates
I don't recall any version that auto updates. With the old launcher that looks like the current one, I have never experienced an auto update. I don't know why, but that is what happens for me.

If you really want the old launcher, here's the download: https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/launcher/Minecraft.exe
I'd recommend not, and just use the current one, because you can install mods.
That doesn't take you to the official download. And you could find false downloads easily

Curse PremiumDon't google it, chances are you'll find a pirated version, at least with my experience.
Which launcher are you having trouble with? Take a screenshot.
I'm just a Minecraft player that likes to give my opinion. Nothing special to see here.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
