I wasn't the one who installed minecraft on my computer, so I don't know how exactly it was installed, but it's a '.exe' file and there is no 'saves' folder anywhere, so I'm afraid that if I install the new version (I'm still running pre-horses Minecraft) I'll lose my worlds. Also, the backup manager doesn't let me save worlds, only the full-game '.mcgame' backups, but those work fine and restore all my worlds when I use them. If I install the latest version of Minecraft will I be able to restore the .mcgame and get my worlds back?

Ok u run definetly an non Vanilla Minecraft. Vanilla Minecraft store all files in ".minecraft". (Dont know it Apple do it same way but MS and Linux do it so)
The Vanilla Minecraft hold his worlds in ".minecraft/save", maybe u found u worlds in u ".mcgame/save" folder?!?
