I recently upgraded to Windows 10, and installed minecraft on my pc. When I installed optifine, everything installed properly and everything. But when I try to launch minecraft 1.8.1 optifine, it doesn't launch, but the normal Minecraft works. What could cause this? And will I ever be able to use optifine?

The current Minecraft installer comes with its own bundled version of Java. This is for vanilla Minecraft only, and if you wish to play modded Minecraft you must download the latest Java from Java.com/download.
To install mods manually in windows you must install a app called winrar (or as such) to help view Java archives.
If this still doesn't work, please post your Minecraft launcher log in a spoiler box.
...You don't need Winrar to run jar files. If Java Platform SE Binary is not an option to run the Optifine installer with and you cannot locate the path manually - C:/Program Files/Java/jre-(version number)/bin/javaw.exe - then you do not have Java installed/installed correctly. Install it, and use it to run the jar file.

You don't need to install Java to install Optifine; you can extract the Optifine jar and place the files inside in the Minecraft jar, following the steps shown here (note the part about renaming the .jar extension to .zip - although certain versions of the game have illegal Windows filenames for a class file, such as aux.class; this lead me to get WinRar to mod 1.5.1(2?) when I tried this and it didn't work) - all the installer built into the Optifine jar file does is automate that process; I even still install it that way. Also, Optifine runs perfectly fine with the built-in Java, as should any other modded versions unless they use their own launcher or you try to run Forge for 1.7.2 or earlier on Java 8 (including the built-in Java) without a patch.

Yes, that would work as well. However, Archeantus seemed to suggest that he needed Winrar to run the installer - which is definitely not the case. If he were to install it manually as you suggested he would, but not to just run an installer as OP was asking about.

Open Optifine with Java if you're trying to use it as an installer. If you're trying to use it as a Forge mod rather than a standalone, install Forge and put the Optifine jar in the mods folder.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Curse PremiumWinRar is to install the mod manually (If you haven't already). You need to install java separately to be able to play modded minecraft.

What if when i download it does not show as a jar file then what do i do? (using windows 10)
