I recently downloaded MC 1.7.6. I can open the launcher and everything looks fine on the MC title screen. I can enter the options menu and modify settings and do other things. The second I enter the game itself, I get severe hardware lag (not to be confused with internet lag). I'm talking a frame every so many seconds, if that many. Half of the time it freezes for a bit and then goes back to normal.
I have all of the video settings set to Minimal or Fast. Minimum Particles. No clouds. Short render distance. Etc. Set to use a maximum of between 512 MB and 1 GB RAM max.
My system is older, but from what I have been reading that some others are running, I don't think I should have lag quite so bad.
Dell Inspiron 1501, bought in early 2007
AMD Turion 64x2 TL-66, 2.3 GHz dual core (don't think I can go faster)
4 GB DDR2 PC-6400 (or whatever it is) 800 MHz SDRAM, 2.67 GB accessible by Windows and programs (MAXED OUT in both size and speed)
160 GB 5400 RPM Toshiba SATA HDD, system managed paging file size, generally about 2 GB
AMD/ATI Radeon Mobility XPress 1150 IGP with 256 MB GDRAM (shared from RAM, as reported by GLView). Latest drivers I can find, 6.14 (actual driver versions, driver package is for a Vostro and is 8.x version). Any newer drivers are Win Vista/7+
Windows XP Home Edition 2005, Service Pack 3, all current hotfixes and other updates.
DirectX 9
As reported by GLView, OpenGL version 2
Java V7 update 5 (contemplating downgrading to V6)
Unfortunately, I'm also running Avast! antivirus software. Not for too much longer since it seems to be eating my system resources like mad.
I had been getting crashes with 1.8.4 because of some weird "can't find OpenGL version" error but that has gone away with downgrade to 1.7.6. I've tried slowing down the graphics acceleration already to no avail. The other night, I tested the online demo of MC and was getting between roughly 5 and 50 FPS with very little issues. So what is the difference between online MC and the downloaded version? Viewing Task Manager with MC running in the Window, I haven't had more than 1400 M of RAM (also combined with paging file) used (out of 51xx M combined between physical and virtual RAM)
I know most are going to argue I should just get a new computer. I haven't been a fan of any Windows version after XP (I actually bought an HP laptop almost identical to the one I have now with Vista and sold it less than a month after I bought it because I detest Vista that much). Never used Unix/Linux and definitely can't afford Mac. I don't have the resources right now to upgrade to a newer PC. I had bought some parts to put together a 2.8 GHz desktop, but the used motherboard was apparently DOA. The only other PC I have that might possibly be capable of running MC has a 2.4 GHz Athlon processor and currently has 1 GB DDR (yes, that is OLD DDR) 400 MHz SDRAM, upgradeable to 2 GB, but the graphics card is an Abit Radeon 9250 AGP, which I have read here doesn't like MC at all. And I don't have any video game consoles.
Is there any possible way I can get MC running on this laptop at a somewhat useable rate? I'm not planning on doing much other than dabbling here and there in Creative mode when I get bored of doing other things.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I have run 3D modeling programs before. I like POV-Ray, for instance. As I mentioned before with Task Manager, I am not using more than about 55% CPU running Minecraft, either. Also don't have keyboard input for using inventory or moving (have movements set on arrow keys).

Performance settings aside I really don't suggest using arrows keys (especially in a 3d game!), but make sure Advanced OpenGL is set to on (unless your computer doesn't support it)
And for the differences in minecraft online/executable is massive. Originally you could play the full game in the browser (logged in of course) but now all that is available is the classic version of minecraft, which is essentially a heavily outdated version of the game. (Please inform me if I am wrong!)

Not using arrow keys? I grew up playing Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein, Rise of the Triad, Blake Stone:Aliens of Gold, and of course Doom. Using only the keyboard (no gamepads here, never have been). Not using arrow keys and whatever the game originally wanted didn't and still seems kind of odd... I don't even remember what the original keys were...
Advanced OpenGL? Going to need some pointers on that because up until I started wanting to play MC I didn't even know I HAD OpenGL, much less version 2, much much less than knowing how to tweak it.

Probably wasd, takes a bit getting used to but then you have both sides of the keyboard to your advantage. As for AdvancedOpenGL, you'll find the settings in your Minecraft video settings. Again, I'm not sure if your computer will support it but if it can advanedopengl will help the performance a bit in some areas of the game.
Well, I've tried everything I can. It looks like either a full wipe of this thing and a complete reset or getting new hardware. Still can only do stuff looking straight up, 3-4 FPS. Oh well.
What's considered a decent PC nowadays? Probably going to end up running Win10...

Update:
I am able to do things in MC. When I am looking straight up. I get about 4 FPS looking up and straight nothing any other direction.
Anyone have any suggestions?
You might be able to run 1.7.10 + the fastcraft mod and get better performance. But don't expect insane boosts.

Not looking for 200 FPS. Anything above 5 or so would be GREAT.
