You shouldn't have to do anything for your launcher to realize there's an update. Here's what you do.
1. Open your Minecraft Launcher. You should see a page listing all the recent news and updates from Mojang upon arrival at the main screen.
2. Go to the bottom left corner of the launcher and you should see a drop-down menu and two buttons under it. Select "Edit Profile". If you didn't create a profile, no sweat. Minecraft should have made one for you automatically anyways.
3. The "Edit Profile" settings screen is a little complicated, I know, but bear with me. Look for the drop-down menu that is labeled "Use version:" and select it.
4. In the drop-down menu that appears go to the top if you aren't already and press Use Latest Version.
5. Click "Save Profile" at the bottom-right.
And you're done. You have set your Minecraft you always use the latest version, and when a new update comes out, automatically download it the next time you play.

"There are no words to describe the immersive, engaging experience video games can provide so quickly. This has developed communities, so why do so many people say they are harmful? 90% of those criticizers have never played or even tried a video game. Is it not said, 'Don't shoot it 'till you try it'?"

This is the first update since I purchased Minecraft. Can someone guide me to directions on updating my game?
Thanks for your patience with the NOOB!
