I've burrowed through a million threads like this that went nowhere, so I'm really hoping someone can help me if I post about it myself.
I run windows 7 32 bit on a PC, specs to follow.
I double click the little icon
the window comes up that says a bunch of nonsense.
That window closes in a timely manner, and the launcher window opens.
After a few seconds, I can see the news posts. On the bottom, it says "loading profiles" and the button to launch the game is grayed out.
This takes about 15 minutes, regardless of what I have running in the background. It's never exactly 15 minutes (I'll admit to not clocking it 100% of the time) but it's never done in less than 10 minutes. I generally leave the room and come back later when it's ready, which is something I haven't had to do since I played games on my Commodore 64. (fist bump to anyone who knows what I'm talking about)
Once my profile is loaded and the button is clickable, minecraft itself loads rather quickly and I have no issues with slowness/lagginess from that point on.
To answer some of the common troubleshooting questions:
1. Yes, I have restarted my computer. This has been going on since I downloaded Minecraft a year or so ago, I'm only now asking for help.
2. Yes, I'm running the current version of java, which the java.com verifier tells me is Version 8 Update 51. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled it.
3. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft.
4. I have never downloaded or run a single mod in my life. 100% base game
5. Please don't patronize me.

Sorry if I seem defensive. I just got done reading a ton of threads like this where the OPs were treated like idiots
Perhaps you should start off by providing hard information, i.e. the launcher logs that have timestamps in them.
My MC starts so fast I don't even know when it ever displays a message about loading profiles. I'm going to guess that the delay is occurring during the "load remote version list" step of the startup and that the delay is caused by the connections to that particular server (s3.amazonaws.com) having to time out before it can get to the next step which is actually loading the profiles from local disk.
I'm attaching a picture of my launcher so you can see what I'll be staring at for the next ~15 minutes
The logs I'm familiar with (in AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/logs) seem to me to begin when minecraft actually boots up. Is a log recorded as the launcher itself is doing its thing? If so, where might I find it? Or am I just dead wrong?
I've had problems with launcher with the Play/Offline button staying grey.. although not waited 15min to see if it eventually turns on - usually gave up...
I discovered my problem was the fact I cleared out my 'Versions' folder of (what I thought) were unused..It seems that SOME of my existing profiles NEEDED files in the other folders
I have 5 profiles set up - 1.7.4 Vanilla/modded (forge/liteloader), 1.8 Vanilla/Modded (Liteloader) And 'Latest' (for snapshots), but I had ~15 folders in my 'Versions' (about 6 'forge' versions & 4-5 optifine version for both 1.7 and 1.8) ..
I removed all the ones that were not listed in Launcher's Profile list thinking they were not used but Launcher button stayed grey.
I re-added all deleted ones & Launcher worked - so I slowly deleted one folder at a time until launcher failed..
... Discovered I needed at least one optifine and one forge folder to remain for launcher to work properly - I'm guessing that there must be some reference in these required by one of the profiles that I have set up
It's an interesting issue... Do you by chance have an antivirus program installed? Anything with something along the lines of "sandbox"? I bring this up because some AV programs that also include some kind of system protection will sometimes sandbox a program and it doesn't run 100% correctly. If you receive a message upon running a game about allowing it to do something, if you trust it, allow it.
I'll have to ponder on your issue some. I have yet to see this kind of problem, even after reinstalling Minecraft.
May be unrelated, but since it says guest, I take it you have not logged into your profile yet...what kind of internet do you have? Is your computer wireless or wired?
Whoops! Haha, it was right in front of me and I didn't see it. Now that you've pointed it out, I do remember looking in here a long time ago, around when I started playing minecraft. I'd complained about the load times to a buddy, and he was like, "but it loads quickly for me..."
Log to follow.
@Cannonfoddr
Oh. That certainly sounds related. I took a peek inside that folder, and found the following folders there: 1.7.5; 1.7.8; 1.8.1; 1.8.3; 1.8.7; 1.8.8 ~~since I don't do any modding, I seem to have far fewer than you had. Each of these folders contains a .jar file and a .json file matching the name of its respective folder. Am I meant to delete some of these folders, do you think?
@comatoseDreamer
I've had minecraft for pretty close to the life of this computer, which I purchased/assembled jan/feb of 2013. At first I had McAfee, because I got it for free for a whole year. While I had McAfee, I did consider that it might have something to do with it, but I'll admit to only trying to load minecraft with antivirus completely disabled. But that wasn't it. My free sub lapsed, and a friend had a free Norton year they didn't want. I remembered the Norton of Old, who sucked, and only reluctantly agreed to use it. When the free sub lapsed, I ended up renewing it with actual money. Anyway, during this Norton period, I never tried to mess with it, since the problem existed beforehand, and I'd already ruled antivirus software out. I can try doing what you say, but I'd rather try other things first, since I'm fairly certain that's not the issue.
Cable, wired.

I think it makes an HTTPS connection at that point, but can't be entirely sure. All the non https connections it makes on startup appear to be related to the News page. It might be connecting to s3.amazonaws.com. You don't have any entries in your C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file, do you? If there are entries in there that point to IP addresses that are no longer valid connections might take a long time to timeout.... although then I'd expect to see an error in the log eventually..... hmm
If you are disconnect from any networks, does the launcher launch more quickly? Obviously if you're never online during the version list update step you won't see new versions, but if it fails quickly and moves on, you could be up and running quickly whenever you wanted to.
There's not a lot of clues here other than the fact that we know that the 'remote version list' takes an excessive amount of time to (successfully?) refresh.
I wish I knew more about what exactly the launcher was doing in this phase of startup because that would provide hints on which way to go next....
