My son bought minecraft a little while ago and it ran fine on our old family PC with a older version of Java.
We had to get a new HDD and reinstall everything. We have the latest version of ATI Catalyst that will run on our graphics card.
After downloading the new version of minecraft 1.8.7 the graphics will simply not draw?
It loads fine and i've tried adjusting all the settings in the game and on my graphics card (both performance and or quality).
Is this just a simple case of a new program not working on an old machine? Do i need to go back to an older version of minecraft so he can play something he saved up to buy?? Is this an issue with the minecraft java and our card or something completely different??...

Are you sure your graphics drivers are up to date? There is a small chance that could help. But most likely, you need a new graphics card. You could try running 1.7.2 or 1.6.4 as well.
Also, do you have an integrated graphics card, if so it may actually run minecraft if it has newer graphics standards

Maybe you should use a older version on Minecraft and ask Mojang. Maybe even get a new computer or laptop. Or go to the library to play. And install the lasted Java. That's all that I can think of. Or even wait a couple of minutes for everything to be good.

ATI is old, so I guess so.
Download the latest AMD drivers. Use VSync.

Try using a 1.7 version
That would delete your inventory though(due to the 1.8.0 changes), don't make him do it.
