I have a crazy problem. Minecraft worked for a few years. Then a few days ago servers stopped working. When I tried to get in it said, "authentication servers under maintenance". Idk what that means. I'm only fourteen for crying out loud! I would like an answer to that first. Then for some reason, my dad and I decided to install a new java (thinking it would help). The update notes would pop up like they should. But then, I would hit play, and nothing would come up. The play button would just disappear and reappear again quickly and the game would not run. We decided the new java didn't work so we uninstalled it. Now the message "the registry refers to a nonexistent Java Runtime enviroment istallation or the run time is corrupted." comes up and the game will not work at all. I need help. I am not a computer geek but I can get into the programs (and programing). I will take any answers you guys on forums have. THX

It means exactly as it says, the authentication servers, or the servers that log you in to your account and make sure you are actually you logging in and not an account intruder, are down for maintenance, or in this case apparently got hit offline by a DDoS attack. The auth servers got hit offline by a DDoS attack which floods the servers with so much traffic that they cannot effectively process all the requests and thus the server just stops responding to outside requests. Reinstalling Java won't fix it, it's not on your end.
As for your Java issue, did you reinstall Java or just assume it'd work without Java installed? The game is written in Java, same with the launcher, it requires Java to run, so of course when you remove Java it won't run. Reinstall Java and try again, if it doesn't work post back here saying why.
And, just saying, if you don't know anything about computers why did you attempt to fix it yourself rather than do a quick Google search of "what does authentication servers down for maintenance mean", or search online for why the Minecraft servers are down?

Thx. I did reinstall java but I did the newest java. We were using an older java for minecraft. I took out the corrupted java and put in the new one. It no longer comes up as launcher4j but when I hit play, it wouldn't work. I checked the launcher log and it said something about the new java not working. Minecraft 1.8.7 must have been made for java 1.8.0_31 (the older version). Now I just need look twice to find the older java on their site. I did not see it the first time. All I saw was java 1.7.
Oh and is there a way, if I get the game working again, to clear the bug that is messing with the servers.
Thank you for the help.
I know. I should have consulted google. I was told that the older version was corrupted possibly by the new version. Now I know not to update java unless mincraft is made for that version of it.

Try downloading the non java launcher. Minecraft was built on Java 7 but I have the latest Java and it works for me. The launcher downloadable at minecraft.net(which downloads as minecraft_installer.msi) will download the required Java runtimes for you so if it's bad Java then that might help

To my knowledge installing Java 8 is absolutely fine and is in fact recommended by Mojang themselves as it has optimisations for multi-threading which Minecraft 1.8 uses. I'm running Java 8 and am having no issues, although I do have Java 7 installed just in case. It was likely an installation error.
What bug are you referring to? The auth servers being down? That's not a bug, and that cannot be fixed. The servers are down due to a DDoS attack, which is a type of cyber attack in which a network of computers flood a single large server with so much traffic that it's constantly reading faux requests and cannot read actual requests from actual legitimate users. In simpler terms (and in an analogy), a network of computers are essentially spamming F5 and reloading the page (again, analogy, this is not what is actually happening) causing the server to slow down due to the amount of requests being made. You can't fix it and Mojang can't either, when a server gets hit with an attack like this, the only strategy to "fix" it is either attempt to change addresses to throw off the attacker(s) or just wait till it's over.

We got the game up and running again. We actually deleted it and installed a new one. The new one saw the only java we had and used it. We can at least play single player. I am going to look up the server problem on google.Thank you jcm2606 for your help.

I did explain the server issue on my last comment.

Yes but I missed it because I was so desperate to get the game working at all. Thank you for your help.
