I'm posting this in Modded Client Support because technically we're trying this using a mod pack downloaded through Curse, but I don't think the mods are the issue. (The pack is FTB Mage Quest, just in case it matters.)
I have a world that I've been playing on with friends using Open to LAN that stopped allowing us to connect to each other tonight. In previous iterations, without making any exceptions or changing any settings to firewalls or networks, as long as we were on the same network SSID everything was working fine. Tonight, the client machines cannot connect - they hang at "Logging in..." when trying to connect and then eventually throw a "Connection timed out" error. This error also occurs when attempting to host any other world and from any other machine on the network, so it is not just that world save or the usual host computer.
I have tried the following things to get this to work:
1) Creating inbound connection rules for Java on all of the affected computers, allowing connection over TCP and UDP on all network types.
2) Disabling the firewalls outright (McAfee-managed on the host computer, vanilla Windows Firewall on the client) and attempting to connect.
3) Creating a VPN connection through Hamachi on both machines and attempting to connect directly.
4) Attempting to use the Direct Connect feature to connect to the host's IP and port. Attempting to Direct Connect produces a different error message about the authentication servers being down for maintenance.
Of note are the following pieces of information:
1) The client machine can always see the server; it hangs when trying to log in, not when trying to find the server in the first place.
2) When either host or client signs into a world on single player, the accounts' skins are missing. Everyone is Steve. Given that the issue is occurring somewhere in the "Logging in..." portion of the process, one wonders if there is some issue with minecraft.net accounts interfering with the process.
I have not yet tried reinstalling the mod pack, mostly because I am not convinced that it could be the mods' fault when it is so clearly an internet issue. (Also, I can load the world and click Open to LAN and it works fine. The only broken thing is that nobody else can connect when I do open the server.)
Any and all suggestions would be quite helpful, as I have exhausted more or less anything I can think of. Thanks for your time.

Well, that sucks! Thanks for filling me in, sorry for being one of the many voices about this.
I assume we have no information yet as to when they'll have recovered.
Actually, they are back up now.
