Can anyone help me, my son says he can't play minecraft on our netbook. When he launches the program and enters his username and password an error comes up that says can't connect to minecraft servers as seen below. He is putting in his username and also his email address and nothing works. What is he doing wrong? We have a netbook running on windows 7.
Generally, you authenticate with email not just a username unless his account is years old and hasn't been migrated. Can you log into minecraft.net successfully?
Minecraft auth isn't down so much that I'd automatically explain it away as service interruption.
No...when this comes up it means that the username + password is correct but your computer/internet cannot connect to minecraft's auth servers. If your son has been able to log on to minecraft before it means that minecraft is not blocked...and you should just wait a couple hours. If he hasn't logged on before make sure minecraft isn't blocked.
Open windows firewall, and click on "Allow an app/feature through firewall". Afterwards, scroll down till you find 'Minecraft' or 'Java Platform SE Binary'. Make sure you allow all of the programs/features listed under those to communicate with the computer. Your antivirus (if you have one) may also be at blame for the issue. Check to see if it's blocking minecraft from communicating with the computer..
Hope this helped

1) You are typing your Email/Password correctly.
2) It's just Minecraft being down, since it's been 2 hours since you posted. You should try again and hopefully Minecraft works.
3) He isn't doing anything wrong. It's normal because sometimes games have to do maintenance
Let me know if it's still broken. x3

Open command prompt and run the command "netsh winsock reset"
Try logging into minecraft.net. Also, use the email of the account, not the username.

You generally login using the email you signed up with, not your UserName. This was changed in 1.7.2
