Minecraft was working fine for years until recently i am unable to update my game, i recorded the steps on my phone, then screenshotted each step as i cant put a video here.
FIRST IMAGE: Right when i hit the start button, it begins to install the file in the picture. After a few moments my computer began to lag severely.
SECOND IMAGE: Eventually the file does progress, window freezes and the rest of my computer. Hence why i had to use my phone to document the events because i couldnt even open paint for a screenshot.
THIRD IMAGE: That one file finishes its download, and the next file is a /say1.ogg file. Previous attempts also displayed a chicken instead of a creeper file. This is where my computer completely gives up on the download.
LAST IMAGE: Just shows the stuff at the top of the launcher, i thought it might come in handy.
Anyways, can anyone help me out with this? I want to hop on my buddies realm that he opened up, but i cant seem to get this to work. Ive tried reinstalling both with the .exe file and the other one on the website, same stuff happens. My computer is fine, its something wrong with the game, therefore do not ask me to update my drivers.

Then why are you using out of date java? So if you haven't done it already, Update Your Drivers. Its the first step for any issue.
Beyond that, what are the specifications for your computer? In particular RAM, CPU, GPU. Do you have hard drive space? Is it your internet connection, how fast is it? But be sure that the first thing you do is Update Your Drivers.

8 GB RAM,
Intel Core i5-3570K (3.40 GHZ)
NVIDIA GTX 560 (4GB memory)
2TB driver space (1.5tb remaining)
Windows 7 64 Bit
Drivers are updated
I just reinstalled java with the latest version, and the same stuff happens. This time it froze my boot device, so when i restarted my computer it went to a black screen saying please select insert a boot device. Five minutes later it came back up, however this has happened before the java update.

Another piece of the puzzle here:
I attempted to delete the entire .minecraft folder to do a complete re installation/setup. However, i couldnt. I could delete every file except the Assets folder, where it freezes instantly when i attempt to delete "indexes" and "objects". Hopefully this helps, is there a way i can force delete something?

I fixed the problem. I renamed the old corrupted minecraft folder so that the installer would not recognize it and create a new, fresh one. Thanks for the help!

Avoid using Java 8. It seems to stop Minecraft from starting up.

.. I have to say that some of your symptoms sounds like your hard disk has filesystem damage or is failing.
Feel free to ignore that, but you might want to back up anything you feel is important.
