So I'm very confused and wondering if any one has a solution to my problem. So I have more then enough RAM to run minecraft smoothly (16GB with 6 or 8 alllowed to the game itself) and it does to a with one exception. While playing the game it will, and to a point to where its almost predictable, completely freeze for about two to three seconds and then keep going, and it will do this repeatedly. So being the some what smart person I am hit f3 to see what my FPS and RAM was doing, At first nothing seemed out of the ordinary. However it wasnt until the game froze again that I started to notice a pattern. After the freeze my RAM usage in the game will drop down to 6-12% but will begin to climb steadily regardless of wether or not im moving ( i think moving speeded it up a bit) and the RAM usage will max out. If you guessed that my game froze you'd be correct and it will do it all over again. It deosnt matter how much of my RAM I throw at the game. Also ending all background apps does nothing. I have a great over all build, so i have no clue whats up.
I created a new world and gave it enough time to freeze a few times, this is the only log in my .minecraft folder i could find with any relavnce to the world in question idk how or if it will help but her you go,

Vanilla minecraft should never have more than 2 gigabytes of RAM, and more can cause issues, so if you haven't already try giving it only 1-2 gigabytes.
I appreciate the response, however this solution didn't work and only made the problem more frequent seeing as minecraft now has less RAM to run on. any other ideas?

Just a sudgestion that you may try to test is to reduce rendering distance from 21 to 12 for example and compare how the game is behaving with that settings.

TAKE CHANCES. TELL THE TRUTH. KISS SLOWLY. DATE SOMEONE TOTALY WRONG FOR YOU.
SAY NO. LOVE DEEPLY. FORGIVE QUICKLY. SPEND ALL YOUR CASH.
GET TO KNOW SOMEONE RANDOM, BE RANDOM. SAY I LOVE YOU. SING OUT LOUD.
FORGET THE PAST. REMMEMBER WHAT IT TOUGHT YOU. LAUGH AT STUPID JOKES.
CRY. APOLOGIZE. TELL SOMEONE HOW MUCH THEY MEAN TO YOU.
TELL A JERK WHAT YOU THINK.LAUGH TILL YOUR STOMACH HURTS.
What JVM arguments are you using? The default JVM arguments added for 1.8 were designed to prevent this issue by enabling incremental/concurrent garbage collection (garbage, memory no longer being used by the program, accumulating explains why you see memory usage increase, then it freezes while the JVM runs its garbage collector to free memory, then the process repeats). 1.8+ is particularly problematic because of the rate at which it allocates new objects, only to discard them.
Optifine's creator explains the issue here, and why older versions weren't so demanding (playing on modded 1.6.4 with Normal render distance I only see a full GC lasting 1/2-1 second perhaps 1-2 times per hour with 768 MB allocated (-Xms set to -Xmx so 100% is allocated; otherwise the JVM may allocate less and GC more often), which is far less objectionable than the stuttering that incremental/concurrent GC gives, although I only have a dual-core CPU; concurrent GC requires that the GC threads run at the same time as the application).
You can get the default arguments back by unchecking the JVM arguments box, save the profile, then reopen, then check the box again (this must be checked; if I uncheck it it only allocates 500 MB of memory, indicating that it isn't processing it as the default is 1 GB; note that you do need 2 GB if you use a render distance above 16 chunks; Optifine is poorly written in that it ignores this vanilla limitation so if you use it be sure that you have allocated enough memory).
I personally don't like Optifine, I find that it causes more problems then it solves most of the time for me. Ah, so that's what that java argument does. Yeah I had the RAM value set way to high for it so instead of running the garbage collector every 128mb as it is default I had it set to run every 6GB witch means it had to get rid of more stuff( if im understanding this correctly) witch causes the freeze. After resetting the JVM arguments, and then just changing the first value to 2 or above (since i play max render distance) the problem stopped. For the first couple launches of the game and loading worlds, I experience some bad crashing when trying to close and save and also some pretty bad block lag, all with really long load times. Not sure why this was happening but after a while it subsided and I haven't experienced a problem since. Thanks for the three of you for getting back to me so quickly. Such a good community.

Again no such luck, it did how ever slightly slow the RAM usage climb, but the same problem persists.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
