So I spent all day getting the XP to repair my pick so I could mine some quartz in the nether, but when I finally did it and hopped through my nether portal, I came out here. The sky stayed black the whole time. I broke a couple blocks from the ocean monument for the sake of pillaring back up to my portal.
I guess the question here is: why? Also, how can I get it to NOT do that so I can go back to the Nether for real?
Okay, so this isn't just me, that's actually comforting! I deactivated and reactivated the portal, though, and the same thing still happened; is there some way to get it going back into the Nether, preferably without moving it somewhere else?
you can always go back to nether by just walking into the portal, thats whay portals exist in the first place, you don't need to move it, it will work at the place you already have one, just step into it, and you will be transported to nether.
As for question "why", it has to do with mathematics, every portal tries to match its pair on the other side, if game can't find a valid one within a range (you can google on actual range) it will create a new one, not quite randomly but thats a long story. I don't understand what do you mean by getting into nether "for real", asides it is a video game, every walk through portal gets you into nether ... how much more real you want it to be?

This portal is on the OVERWORLD, not in the Nether. I try to go to the Nether, but I come out in the middle of nowhere, presumably still in the Overworld. This portal won't actually take me to the Nether at all. It used to, but now it won't.
If you are using server to play on to, there is a feature in server.properties file called "allow-nether", can be set to values true or false, could verify if that is set to true or false.
If you are playing in singleplayer, only idea that i may have is that nether dimmension save got corrupted, you could try to backup your save game from
%appdata%/,minecraft/saves/<name of your world>/
and then to delete ftrom it folder called DIM1 (thats where nether files are stored), and try it again.
You could also try starting a new world in singleplayer , do some creative cheating to make portal and try going into nether from a new world.
Give us feedback on how did it go ...

Yep, that worked! I should've figured it would be something like that, since I had to recover this map using some recovery software, and I'm sure I missed something or put it back together wrong. On the upside, I didn't build anything in there and now all the nearby quartz is back!
No worries, glad it is working again, you may also want to compare peoples expiriences with versions of Java and/or operating system, could be having buggy versions, just to avoid happening again once you build stuff eventualy there.

Alright we are making progress ...
