If there are corrupted chunks in your save, then a tool like mcedit might be able to fix them.
The symptoms of such damage can be different kinds of things. Places you can't go (or the game freezes). Hundreds and hundreds of one kind of mob in some area, etc.

The save won't show up if the level.dat file is corrupted / damaged.
The first thing you should do is copy the folder before you start playing with it, so you can get back to this place if you do more damage.
If this file is damaged, then other parts of the save are also likely damaged. Do you have a backup?
If so you should strongly consider restoring from there.
If not, you should at least have a file level.dat_old which is a game made backup of the level.dat file.
Copying that onto level.dat ought to make the save show up again, but it won't fix any damage to any of the other files.
