Deleted .minecraft in %appdata%
Deleted c:\minecraft folder (where the EXE used to be)
Downloaded minecraft.exe from Mojang
Ran it...and it downloaded and unpacked the runtime, and launcher...then stopped
The minecraft folder now has nativelog.txt, minecraft.exe, and 2 folders: runtime and game
The .minecraft folder was created in %appdata% when I ran the EXE, but it is 100% empty
I did dxdiag and it's current ... drivers from 2 weeks ago.
Been running minecraft forever on this PC...so it's not a new account or anything like that
Also removed old legacy java folders
Also checked to be sure no references to old java in environment variables.
I can re-run minecraft.exe, and all it does is 'hourglass' the cursor for 3 seconds, then stop.
In taskmanager, I can see minecraft.exe load, the launcher java loads, then both disappear within that same 3 seconds
Advice??
Through a LOT of troubleshooting, it turned out that ClearType ... the font rendering tool from Microsoft ... was not letting the launcher start.
If you need help ... go to the IRC chat area ... http://webchat.esper.net/?channels=minecrafthelp
