Type: Integrated Server (map_client.txt)
Is Modded: Probably not. Jar signature remains and both client + server brands are untouched.

Of course, despite me constantly telling her to back up her maps, she never did, so there's no back up. Is there anything we can try to get the map to read again or is it probably a goner?

Use the program MCEdit to remove the corrupted chest, or if that fails regenerate the chunk its in. No way to save the rest of the chests items.
Assuming of course that is the issue. If its not, best thing is to regenerate the chunk she was in, although it would suck if you had to do that.
