I noticed my sound was not working (in singleplayer and servers using 1.8.4) and, after trying numerous suggestions on how to fix sound issues, I decided I would just download a new resource pack and make due with weird sounds (I just wanted to hear farm animals so I could find them, and enemies sneaking up behind me). The resource pack idea did me no good, except force me to notice the little note saying I am missing my pack.mcmeta file. I deleted everything relating to Minecraft four separate times (I was being hopeful), redownloading everything in turn. I have no modifications, I playing completely vanilla. I have explored, along with a friend of mine on his own computer, far and wide across the internet. We have both found threads started on this issue on a bunch of different sites, with no valid results (all the generic 'delete and redownload' mumbo jumbo, despite every original poster have said they had already done so more than once). I did not, however, see this issue for version 1.8.4, most being for 1.7.4 or older.
Any suggestions on how to fix this are welcome and appreciated (aside from deleting and redownloading, as, again, I have done so more times than even made sense). It is no tragic thing--the textures and such are all as they should be. The sounds are simply convenient, and I also like things that I pay money on to work properly (not a complaint, Minecraft has always run well for me, just moving back down to 1.8.4 so we can play on this server is what has messed up my files).
Thanks!
If you need any further information to help, just ask and I will give what I can. Hopefully, for once, this mystery can actually be solved so there is at least one place for people to go for help with this issue on the internet).
Again, I may sound stupid, so I do apologize greatly, but isn't the default Resource pack just naturally place on the game? I tried an outside sound pack when I realized all the sounds were broken, but it did me no good. The world is still silent. It had been working, then I went backwards to 1.8.4 for the server, and all sound cut out. I went back to the latest version, and the sound is missing from there, as well. When I go to load on, the log says "Attempting to load" a bunch of files for the asset folder, and fails all of them. When I go an look, they simply do not exist in any of my files. The asset folder does, but it has an "index" folder with a notepad document, an empty "objects" folder, and a "skins" folder than includes several folders name with letters and numbers. I know it used to have a "sounds" folder, but that is missing now so I assume that is part of the issue, but I don't know where on earth to get a replacement.
Would it be easier to diagnose (or at least try to) if I post up a copy of the loading log? Unless I do need to activate the resource pack somehow, in which case I would need to know how to do that. I know how to add new ones on, but I don't even know where to find the default.
Sorry, I know that is probably a whole lot of words that are of no help to you. Short answer is, if you are referring to the default pack, then I do believe I tried it by just opening the game and playing the world. Correct me if I am wrong. If you are referring to the sound pack I mentioned downloading, the answer is still yes. I put it zipped in the resource folder, opened the world, nothing. I then unzipped it in the resource folder, which I know is not how they are supposed to work, but I figured I'd try. Still nothing.

Did you actually try the pack?
Sorry, this may be a dumb question, but what do you mean? Do I have to unzip pack.mcmeta? If so, where could I find it to do so?
Or am I misunderstanding you completely?
We do not care about pack.mcmeta. Forget that it was ever a thing
Now pretending pack.mcmeta doesn't exist,
Did you actually try the resource pack.

I've had the same problem. I went and re-downloaded the launcher from here. http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/support/unmodified-minecraft-client/1861947-the-new-launcher-what-you-need-to-know the updater fixed everything from there sorry if this is a tad bit late.
