When I updated Java to 8 my son's modded Minecraft stopped loading. I can't give you a crash report because it just won't load. This is what I have figured out.
Old mods (1.6-1.7) will not run on Java 8 with the Forge that goes alone with them (the game just won't open when I press play)
I can run 1.8 mods with Java8 .
I tried removing Java 8 & re-installed Java7. The game still will not open if I have any 1.6-1.7 mods in the files. If I remove the mods the vanilla game will open fine
Ideas? His favorite mods are 1.6-1.7 & we haven't found any decent 1.8 mods. It seems to me the fix should have been removing Java8, but that didn't work.....

Here's what I did. I uninstalled Java 8 then found the path for Java 7 copied and pasted it into the executable under profile editor. Hope this helped! If you need me try explain anything (I suck at explaining stuff) I will happily
Thanks Tree Puncher. So.......you uninstalled Java 8 & then you installed 7 correct? I was thinking I need to find the path & link it there, but I can't seem to figure out how to find the exact folder location on Java 7........if you could just walk me through that part I would be SO thankful. I tried the Java patch that's floating around out there in cyber land (the one you put in your mod folder that allows you to run older formats with Java 8) & the the game will load, but immediately crashes

Okay, so I run windows 8 so you know in case anything is different (Hopefully nothing is). So, first, go into control panel. Then find the Java Control Panel (Just a big symbol that says Java). Open it and click on the tab named Java. then it should say "View and manage Java Runtime versions and settings for Java applications and applets" under that there is a button that says "View..." Click that and copy the path. and then paste it in the executable and it should work! Note: I use "Big Icons" under the "view by" option. I also have a visual if my explanation sucked! Hope this helped you!!!!
Ugh!!! It didn't work I have Java 7 running. I put in the path. I get a crash report with javalang-no class def fround-error The game did open & showed the mod installed, but crashed before starting. That is the same issue I had when I tried to install the patch for Java 8. Without the path being put in like you mentioned or putting the patch file into the mods the game just won't open using an older Forge......I'm just lost!

That really helps! Thanks so much for taking the time out to explain. I'll give it a shot later & let you know the results.
