I'm sorry for such a weird question. I was trying to log into a server (1.7.10) I double checked that I had the correct IP Address and it "let me in." The screen was still stuck on the "Logging in..." portion of the screen for like a half hour. Why can't I join the server? What are some possible causes? Thanks. Need help ASAP. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

This may be a bug with your internet or the game itself. I suggest deleting your minecraft folder and making a new copy, that usually helps it clear out.

I don't think OP was saying 1.7.10 is the server IP, but rather the version number, as in the server was running Minecraft 1.7.10.
But, that is a valid possibility. Make sure the server IP is of the correct format and of the correct type, i.e. that the IP you have is for an online server, and that your not trying to log into a LAN server without being on the LAN network. Generally, a LAN server will look something like 192.168.2.# (with # being from 1-6 or a very low number showing what number the server computer is on its own LAN network. While an actual online server could have all number of possible beginnings, middles, and ends depending on location and your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Though it will follow the same sort of format as stated by aNaturalCause of: ###.###.###.###. The numbers between each period of an IP will always have from 1 to 3 digits in it.
A Note about Port numbers:
Many routers people use for private servers that aren't a well known mini-game or community server require the presence of a port number in the IP to designate which port the server is trying to get out on. While this is generally something that the server admin deals with, if it is necessary and missing from the IP they give out, no one except LAN computers will be able to connect to that server. A port number is number that comes after the IP and is preceded by a colon, like this: ###.###.###.###:##### Check to see if the server requires a port number and they may have just not provided it.
Other possibilities
Problems on your side could include:
You are using mods and the server isn't. Though this shouldn't matter if you are running a vanilla client. Check to see that you are in fact running a vanilla profile and not a Forge profile as this will cause any mods in your 'mods' folder to load and become active and prevent you from accessing the server properly.
The server is running mods and you're not. In this case, find out what they are and install them.
The server is running mods, and even just one of the mods you have installed is of the incorrect version number. If this is the case, check all the version numbers for the mods you are trying to run to make sure they are all 1.7.10.
You are both running mods, but the version of Forge you are running is incompatible with one or more of the mods you have installed. You may have an older version of Forge installed for 1.7.10 that, though it tries to load, one or more of the mods you are attempting to run requires a more recent Forge build.
You are both running mods, but you may have a mod that isn't registering in your mods folder due to still being in a .zip or .rar folder. Therefore, it will cause the mods between the server and you to be mismatched. Open any of these types of files to see if there is one or more .jar files present and extract these directly to the mods folder. If not (which is highly unlikely) then keep it as a .zip or .rar.
Your 1.7.10 Minecraft version or 1.7.10 Forge install (if using mods) could have potentially become corrupt. You can go into the versions folder in your .minecraft folder and delete the 1.7.10 or whatever Forge 1.7.10 version folders you have and re-download them.
Problems on the server side could include:
If the server is a new server with no people, they may have incorrectly installed mods they have, or unwittingly installed client-side only mods on the server which will likely cause it to crash or cause issues with logging in due to mods being mismatched.
If the server uses an IP through a DNS service, (which will usually be of the format: [email protected]) they may have let their account lapse and therefore that IP is no longer valid.
Is this server a well-known public server (like Hypixel, Minecraft Party, etc?), or is it just a personal server that you, a friend, or relative set up? Many of these problems are more likely with a private server than a big public one.
So, these are many of the reasons you might be hanging and unable to log onto a server. If none of these are the solution you are looking for, post again and I can try to assist further.

Retired StaffThe OP is saying that the server is using the VERSION 1.7.10.
This might need to go into the Support section, there will be people there that can better help your issue.
