when I host lan worlds, it doesn't appear on my friends' server lists. when they host lan worlds, it appears on my list, but when I try to join, it says:
Can't connect to the server
java.net.ConnectionException: Connection time out: no further information:
I use a windows, but this happened when my friend used macs and windows. the same things happened regardless.

Instead of using the "Open to LAN" button, try hosting a Minecraft server (downloaded from minecraft.net).
Alternatively, try typing their IPv4 address in the server list manually instead of using the auto-populated server. You'll have to ask them what port they're on as well.
This could be different Java versions such as actual version and/or 64/32 bit types and whether or not your networks are public or private. If listed as public Windows will try to block the Java connection as an untrusted connection.
