This is written a long time after the original thread, but I wrote down what I needed to solve it then.
This problem still happens sometimes! The day I fixed up forge on my minecraft for my brand new PC, with the latest launcher, It did the same thing. Wouldn't launch. But this is in 1.7.10. Guess what? This time I didn't have java 8. Only java 7. But it seems that the link in "Executable Java File" in the client is the problem. Sometimes the link isn't correct, it isn't the version of minecraft. So now I've told you why the patch wouldn't work.
Here's the reasoning I jotted down for why the path doesn't work and why it's unique
example path that works for my PC - C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe
The reason why it only works on a certain PC is because of the first part. On my school PC I wouldn't have been able to use the above line. Why, you ask? Because my school PC was changed by my admin, and the windows user I was on was named my name. So, that would be in front of "Program Files". Another thing is your PC is really named with the letter as the one in the line. See the C: in the first part? That isn't always the same. As well as what your folders are named and such.
Here is the step by step solution to fixing it for anyones windows computer.
[I have only used this in windows 7 and 8, so you can tell me whether or not it works on earlier versions]
#1 ) Go to your file explorer, included in your windows system.
#2 ) Go to "This PC", you know, it's above where you find your flashdrive. Just double click on it.
#3 ) Now, you should see two folder with similar names, one will be simply "Program Files", and another will be "Program Files()" With a number in the perenthesis. Look in both for a folder named "Java". I found mine in the regular "Program Files", but if you can't just look in the other.
#4 ) Once inside the Java folder go into the bin folder. Once in there you may be thinking "Oh god so much stuff" and I did too. But just keep scrolling until you find a file (it's thumb nail should be the java symbol, making it stand out) that's named " Javaw " and one under it named " Javaws ". It's an application, but don't run it, you don't need to.
#5 ) Right Click the program (it needs to be highlighted to get it's own drop down). Go to the bottom of the drop down and choose properties. Highlight the "Location" text, and copy it. After which open your launcher and choose edit your client. You'll have to check the box for "Executable Java File" or whatever it's called, and paste in the text you copied. Now, click the end of the line and type " javaw.exe " without the quotes. It wasn't added to the end because you copied the location of the file instead of the file's link. Go ahead and play your fixed minecraft!
Please ignore the other posts, as they were answers to my questions when first running into this conflict. No offense to them, they helped, but I don't want to confuse people as I have rewritten the entire thread through my posts.
I just noticed that I put the slash the wrong way, but I tried it and it doesn't work either. I've found the javaw.exe as well, and there are 2. javaws.exe and javaw.exe
EDIT: LOOK AT THE FIRST MESSAGE, FULL SOLUTION ABOVE. It does matter which slash you use, but that wasn't the initial problem.

Just because I'm curious, what are the specs of your computer/laptop (including disk space)

Curse PremiumYou don't have to change to Java 7 to play 1.6.4. You should be fine with Java 8. Just update Forge
