I don't have reliable internet, and setup an Ad-Hoc network (with some difficulty on windows 8) for gaming with my friends which works perfectly well with every other game we play. Except Minecraft.
The error we receive is as follows:
"Minecraft server authentication servers are down"
(or similar)
Before we continue:
Java is allowed on all computers
There are no problems with the firewalls interfering with things (Java is allowed)
This is through the 'Open to Lan' option in the singleplayer menu
It works perfectly fine when we have internet access.
If anyone has found a solution to this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Or an indication of whether or not this is deliberate on the part of Mojang.
When internet access is gone, the server cannot check whether the clients are genuinely logged on due to the nature of Mojang's login system.
If you would like to set up a vanilla server with offline-mode on, it is not too difficult. Simply download the server jar/exe and change the appropriate settings in server.properties.
Yeah, I ended up just using the server software and doing it that way. I wanted to use the open to lan option because it's not as intensive on my laptop and means I don't have any lag, of which I experienced HEAPS while also hosting the server.

You could try decreasing the view-distance in server.properties.
