Hello! I've got a pretty rare issue with MC based on all the googling I've done.
Running plain ol' Minecraft I have no sound. Everything else on my computer works, just not MC. Also I've got a strange icon in place of the crafting table.
I've tried:
Erasing everything minecraft related and re-installing
checked sound settings (in mc and on comp) to ensure MC is enabled
pushed F3 + S
All sound files are in their proper places (none missing) even pack mc.meta though when going to select resource packs the default says "missing mc.meta".
After googling I found info that when using a cracked/unofficial launcher Mojang made it so the game can't locate resource files like sound, icon (that strange icon is used as default by MC), and language. This sounds like my problem exactly.
But I'm not using a strange launcher. Just the one from minecraft.net after I bought the game. HOWEVER around last month I was sent some Aether MC files (trying to get the orig. mod to work) which included an old launcher. The person who sent it could have modified it for all i know.
The problems started shortly after. I've long since erased all the files sent to me but the MC problem persists.
Any suggestions? Anything else it could be? I'd appreciate any help!
Well, fiddled with Java and MultiMC worked! Glorious sound!!! And no more strange icon! Thanks so much, lekrosa!!!
So does this mean something is wrong with my regular launcher I wonder?? Would still like to figure it out.
Thanks so much again!!
No problem! I suspect that there is another folder than LWJGL libraries, or some other libraries, are downloaded to, or something similar is going on. MultiMC keeps its installations of Minecraft all self-contained, so it downloads the libraries individually.

Curse PremiumI recognize that icon as the default LWJGL icon.
I'm not very sure about the default launcher, but have you tried using MultiMC? It bypasses the .minecraft directory completely.
Visit my website here. I use MultiMC and play on CubeKrowd and FrostCraft.
Thank you so much for the suggestion! Tried it out and it wouldn't launch. Got this in the log:
Could it be a java issue??

Was MultiMC in a zip file? That directory looks like a zip file. Oh well, you go it working now.

MultiMC for Windows ships in a zip file. You extract it to an empty folder and run MultiIMC.exe.
