I have the same issue as others below regarding the launcher just stalling out trying to download files. I've been trying all day to get Minecraft to load for my son on a new Windows 8.1 cpu. I've downloaded, deleted, etc. numerous times. I have anti-virus off, the latest version of Java, I've done speed tests, malware scans, and nothing seems to work. I am beyond frustrated. We've had MC on 4 different computers (desktops/laptops) in the house in the same room and desk and at the same internet speeds and never had an issue. Attached is a link to the launcher log. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Most of the files downloaded in that log. Don't delete anything, but run the launcher multiple times. Does it always stop on the same 'twitch' file?
or does it get past that and fail on a different file? If it makes forward progress, even just one file per run, eventually it will have them all.
The file that is failing is a 'native' jar, these contain executable code that can get antivirus programs excited...
