Hi. I just got a refurbished PC that should be able to run Minecraft but it won't. I get a "Pixel format not accelerated" error when I've tried to run any version of MC. The PC came with:
Intel Pentium dual core 3.4 ghz processor
ATI FireGl v3400 gpu that supports OpenGL 2.0
Win7 Pro
The cpu and gpu drivers are updated and I tried re-installing the gpu drivers. I have Java 7 installed, which is a fresh install. I'm at a serious loss and beyond frustrated because I got this PC to be able to play PC Minecraft again and I can find no further troubleshooting on this error beyond updating the gpu drivers. Any help is appreciated.

I got this crash before and i had to do this (i think its win7 only though)
Device Manager>Display Adapters>click Update Driver the one that pops up. You may have mulitple, if so i cant help you. i figured this out on my own.

I have done that. The only drivers that show up on the "Let me pick from a list" list are the one for this gpu and the standard vga adapter. Neither fix the problem.
hmm everthing i just looked through says the same thing. are you sure the drivers are correct? some computers have different drivers for graphics cards and stuff.

Well, I went to AMD's website and downloaded their driver auto detect. That confirmed that I had the correct and most recent driver for this ATI card.
A friend is sending me a spare Radeon 6850 card she has and knows is a good, non-defective card and I'll swap this one out and see the problem persists. I went through my Steam library to see if I could find any issues with other games, and I did with a few. Graphic glitchs and a couple failures to launch due to OpenGL errors that I shouldn't be getting with this card. So I'm thinking it could be a compatibility issue with the motherboard. I can run plenty of games on it as is--it's just that I got this PC so I can play modded Minecraft again, and it's a real blow that I can't, at least not yet.
I don't think its the Mother Board but just a graphics card incompatability

but seeing its a workstation card it may not be suitable for minecraft
also using windows itself to update drivers for a GPU never works, windows will only find microsoft made drivers, you need to use the manufactures drivers
but seeing its a workstation card it may not be suitable for minecraft
I think that's actually the problem. This refurbished PC is a discontinued business model. I knew the gpu it would come with wouldn't be great but since I have never dealt with ATI FireGL cards before, I did not anticipate this problem. I've been testing with a number of other games and I believe I have narrowed down the issue to frame buffering, and this card doesn't appear to support it (I'm not 100% sure of this deduction however--this is getting into areas of graphics that I am quite ignorant about and can't intuit my way through). There are other issues--like the graphic glitches I see in some game--that I think are simply due to this not being a suitable card for gaming. But bottom line is the card wasn't made for fast graphics processing.
I don't think any drivers will change that but I look at the link you posted. I'm more or less resigned to waiting until the Sapphire Radeon 6850 and compatible psu my friend to sending me gets here. That card has a 2BG frame buffer.
