Hello, I have been playing minecraft on this computer for a while now and I have never experienced lag. I always used to run at a solid 60 frames. Ever since the other day I have been experiencing these HUGE lag spikes almost every second which make the game almost unplayable. I really love minecraft and would love to figure out how to fix this so I can continue playing. Thank You.
I have let my pc rest and started it back up. I have tried minecraft still having lag spikes D: I have more lag spikes in single player then I do in multiplayer for some reason too

Also, make sure that it is related to mine craft and not your PC or internet connection. Try playing another game you like and see if you have the same lag problems.

I have this same issue, even after using Optifine. It has affected every version of Minecraft I have used also. My CPU is horribly under powered and graphics are barely worth mentioning. I'm not sure how exactly the internal server for single player works but I feel like it may involve that.
So I disconnected my Wifi and played offline. I jumped from a 20 - 30 average FPS to 60 - 70 Average FPS. I saw huge drop when I was messing with any light sources though.

Also my pc is 64 bit if that helps.
Try turning off your PC, letting it cool down, then playing.
What version are you playing?
1.8.4 (A.K.A latest version)
Also I will turn my PC off tonight and try it in the morning
Is there any other methods I could try right now?
You can't wait about 5 minutes to turn your pc off, let it cool down, then turn it back on?
Ill do it now and let you know
if your'e on windows i may mean there are pending updates. my PC lags horribly when this happens

1.8 is known to cause preformance bugs, but increase for others, so that's most likely it.

Mind your Craft.
just tried the Pay Day 2 DEMO on Steam no lag runs fine.
