So my friend and i have had realms for about 8 months now, for the first 7 months the game play was good and any lag we experienced was a rare occurrence. However following the 1.8.3 update, the block lag is so bad that the game is unplayable and the connection often quickly times out, this has been going on ever since 1.8.3 came out, is there any solution to this?
to be more specific, i get the most lag when opening a chest or trying to eat food, running around usually isn't too bad, but the server still times out after about 5 mins

The most annoying part about it is that we're paying to have a realms server that we can't use

At the moment, I can't even get in... the realm I've been playing on just kicks back an error.
