First of all, why do you need to allocate more RAM? Usually unless your Minecraft is modified or you intend on running extreme resource packs, you shouldn't need to change it, unless you happen to have a program like Razer Synapse installed that limits the RAM that Minecraft can use externally.
Even so, to diagnose your problem we need to see your error. If it's an error report/crash log, put it in a spoiler or paste it to http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and share the link here. Otherwise, tell us exactly what the error says.
I am having the same problem to... i have a 64 bit cpu but when i try to put in 2GB of ram i get this "error occured during initialization of VM... could not reserver enought space for 2097152KB object heap" i have 8 gb of RAM
This is probably a common problem
If I try to edit the line to allocate more RAM for Minecraft I'll get an error.

Moderatoryou need to be using 64bit java and a 64bit OS to allocate more than about 1.5GB, those errors would point to you running 32bit java
That's strange, I thought I was already running 64bit Java. I know I have a 64bit OS, and my computer has 16GB of RAM.
