I just build a new PC and transferred my saved worlds to it. They were all built with an older version so I set the launcher to 1.7.9. The game loads and I am able to select worlds. Upon selecting one of the imported worlds, the game says that it is loading and building terrain. Then it crashes. It works for levels I just created; I tested amplified mode for fun and it loaded with no issues. Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks!

You need to load 1.8 and change your render distance to 16 chunks or less; you appear to have the issue mentioned here, not sure why it only crashes on existing worlds but the crash report is nearly identical to the one shown in the link.
Also, there is no reason not to load 1.7 worlds in 1.8; there are no significant changes in world generation (i.e. ones that will cause cliffs where biomes mismatch, like between 1.6.4 and 1.7.2).
You should also create a new profile if you run multiple versions of the game, much worse things including serious world corruption (especially when going from 1.8 to an older version) can occur if you accidentally backport a world (possibly also because the game crashes due to the issue here), also change the "game directory" in the profile editor so worlds and configuration files are saved in different locations.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
