This morning, I decided to install Forge for MC 1.8.1 I downloaded both the latest version of Forge (1.8-11.14.1.1344) and the recommended version. As normal, I launched a vanilla version of Minecraft 1.8.3 (latest) and then I ran the Win installer for Forge. The installer complained that it couldn't find a vanilla copy of Minecraft. Huh?? That's odd; as OptiFine can find it, but not forge???
So, I downloaded the universal installer and ran the installer from the command prompt. Yes, there is a straight vanilla copy of Minecraft 1.8.3 installed. What do I get? I tried a different iteration of Minecraft and I got the same error message. Something is wrong. Any ideas?

Just as a test, I downloaded Magic Launcher and a wierd thing happened. It couldn't find minecraft.jar. I had to tell it to look in the Downloads folder. It can see the forge jar files, but no minecraft jar file.

When I originally installed Forge for MC 1.8, there was a previous installation of Forge for MC 1.7.10. It became clear that I couldn't have both. As such, I deleted the bin files for Minecraft and I did a fresh install. So, I thought. Not quite. I fully deleted the game and downloaded a new launcher from the official site. I have to thank Magic Launcher for helping me, to spot the problem.
I just did a fresh re-install of the game. As before, the default launcher fired up a vanilla version of Minecraft 1.8.3. I, then downloaded the recommended Forge. There is just one problem. That recommended version of Forge is for 1.8 and not MC 1.8.3 It would have been nice, if the file lablel was a little clearer.
Forge and FML are properly installed and there's a Forge running MC 1.8 I like the old directory setup at the Minecraft Forge site. It was a little clearer. So, I thank you for the help.

You have Forge 1.8. How can it's name be any "clearer" considering there is Minecraft 1.8? If it was called 1.8.x then maybe ...
Different Forge versions do not interfere with each other. But Forge does need the intended Minecraft version to be downloaded first (by running the vanilla game once). And Forge works only with it's intended Minecraft version (most mods do likewise).
Thanks. I woke up this morning, totally refreshed. I just saw your comment and you are right. My earlier comment is worthy of a facepalm. ๐
