Hi, I purchased 'realms' today, and did the set up for my realm and invited my son to it on his account. I am unable to connect to play the game with him, but he has no issues. We are both running 1.8.3.
I have created a port forward rule in my westell 7500, and in windows firewall. (javaw, port 25565) for tcp and udp. I have both a desktop and a laptop running windows 8.1, and get the same error (java.net.connectexception: connection timed out: no further information) on both units. And no, I am not trying to run them at the same time, but have tried both for testing info. Any help you guys can offer would help. I have checked the HOSTS file. I have a file from mvp.org on the desktop, but the file is empty on the laptop
I had a similar issue trying to connect over a local area network, and had to use the minecraft server 1.8.1 (at that time) to work around it.
OK, I have been able to get some joy, but I cant say I am that happy with it! lol.. I had to disable the firewall in my router completely. I DO have javaw and minecraft listed in the port forwarding tables, pointing to my desktop PC. Does it go by a different name, or maybe use a different port number? All I could find info on said it uses port 25565. I would rather not spend hours of game time with my firewall completely down.
From what I can see, this just covers realm admin. I was able to set up the realm, pick one of the 3 available worlds, and invite users with my firewall up. I toggled the firewall off and on several times last night to be sure that THAT was the problem, and so far have not gotten a result outside of that theory. (firewall up, connection timed out 100% of attempts, firewall down, connected and was able to play 100% of attempts)

Curse PremiumI'm pretty sure Realms is hosted by Mojang and for that reason you aren't required to do any firewall disabling or even any port forwarding.
Check out the Wiki pages on Realms and how to use it (You might need to scroll down a bit for that second link).
