This happened to me twice in a row. The first time, my client crashed. The second time I had to fix the problem by restarting my client (disconnecting/reconnecting made little difference).
I was flying around generating chunks for my server and noticed this glitch in the rendering. It appears to mostly happen in forests. First time, no screenshots. However the second time I was prepared and took multiple shots. When the glitch happens, there are invisible spots in the ground and also 2 layers of ground. When trying to stand on the first layer you fall through and into the second layer. I went ahead and included a screenshot of my debug screen and my video options.

Do you really have a 32bit OS?
Both problems look to me like the video driver is running out of native memory.
64bit Java would help with this if possible.
Reducing your Java heap would help (from -Xmx=1G to -Xmx=768m say)
Possibly there is a memory management issue in your current video driver so you should look to see if there's an update
I'm not sure if reducing the render distance might help.
No my OS is 64-bit, not sure why it shows 32. Reducing render distance doesn't help but I'll try reducing the ram, maybe just getting rid of the java arguments altogether.
Dunno if it's related, but I'm getting something similar, but much much more severe. On the plus side, it's impossible to play, so I haven't hit any "OutOfMemory" errors...
