My girlfriend and I play on a private server. Recently we wanted to try out 1.7.10 with some other mods so we got the mods, and updated Java to build 1.8.0_25-b18 so that we could allocate more ram to Minecraft. This is well and good, made 710 run nice and smooth, the problem is now 1.6.4 won't work at all. Neither of us can get it to load up and it seems to be a java problem. We reinstall minecraft, we run it vanilla, no mods, no forge, and it just won't run at anything lower than 1.7.2
My question is as follows
-Is there a way to get the older version of Java so that 1.6.4 will run?

This report comes up even after I completely reinstall minecraft from scratch and am trying to get forge launcher to work by itself.
Then configure a launcher profile specifically for your old forge version and point the JVM at that installation of java.
I've also seen something about a patch for old forge to get it to work on Java 8
Thank you I will try to see if I can manage to do that.
Okay starting from scratch -
-Backed up, then deleted, everything in .minecraft folder
-Running Minecraft Launcher
-signing in
-setting player profile to 1.6.4
-setting "Executable" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jr7\bin\javaw.exe"
-hitting save profile
-hitting play
-blank launcher - no crash report no game loading.
I'm 99% sure that something I entered in the Executable line here is incorrect. I used the default java settings for installing the Java7 that was in the link provided by gerbil in this thread.
This is attempting to run minecraft 1.6.4 unmodded at this point to test if I can get the executable line to work, and it doesn't seem to want to work for me.
The simplest way is to navigate in File Explorer, and then cut and paste the path from the top bar into the profile.
Thank you I wasn't catching that typo - now to configure java to use more than the default stack/heap size so I can run Minecraft on higher settings... oh how do I do that again ... That'll be a google search for sure.

We both run 64 bit windows 7.
Please post the crash report

This is a mod problem and doesn't belong in unmodded support.
Certain versions of Forge do not work with Java 8. That's your problem.
I see, sorry I didn't realize that it counted as a mod. Is there a way to get the thread moved to the right forum area?
I guess my question should be "Does anyone know how do we get Java 7 back, without losing Java 8?"
Download and install Java 7: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual_java7.jsp
Then configure a launcher profile specifically for your old forge version and point the JVM at that installation of java.

Ya, I am petty sure that installing Java 7 or 6 should fix the issue

You probably should have "jre7" instead of "jr7".

thank you for that information, I'll look into that as well. So far it seems that 1.6.4 is working again.
