Try running the launcher as an administrator and see if it makes any difference, if not have you tried reinstalling minecraft? I would suggest you to delete the .minecraft folder (you can find it by typing %appdata% on your start menu) if there's no such folder try installing the launcher again and see if the errors persist, keep me posted!
I'm sorry i could not answer for 2 days. You don't need an older Launcher to play older Minecraft versions. It's just a setting in the Launcher. I will write a short Tutorial in a few hours.
Here I am again. Sorry again I was offline for so long
Let's start: To change the Minecraft version you're playing you have to create a new profile in the Launcher (doesn't mean a new Minecraft account!).
Click on "New Profile" in the right bottom corner (Yes, my English is terrible). Then name it like you want, I recommend something with 1.7.10, cause thats the Minecraft version we are going to use. Then select "release 1.7.10" instead of "use latest version" (I got a picture for this step in the attachments), then save the profile. Maybe you will have to switch to your new profile now, simply click on your username just over "New Profile", then select the profile you have created. You will be asked for your username and your password. Enter them and then you can start Minecraft.
Nope, don't know why Save wouldn't work, unless there's a permissions issue, in which case I would expect an error to either pop up or be visible in the launcher log.
Just a solution to play Minecraft while you have this problem: you can launch Minecraft with any other Launcher, e.g. FTB or AT Launcher. At least we can see if this problem is Launcher specific (hope you understand what i want to say with this post :/ )
Do you have a minecraft account? It seems that on every screenshot you are not logged in, try logging in by clicking switch user on the bottom left on your launcher. Everything should work then, if not post a launcher report to assist you further.

Okay MC I'll try this.
Didn't work MC. It didn't let me save profile. This is very frustrating.
What do you mean it didn't let you save the profile? Everything looks fine there.
I click the save profile button but nothing happens.

Do you have an idea, gerbil?

Thanks MC. I don't know what a FTB or AT Launcher is.
