This has happened several times. I play the game, place items in a chest, exit the game, then find contents of the chest are what was there before playing. Everything I placed in the chest is missing. Items that were in player inventory are not affected. So moving items from inventory to chest, exit the game and restart, those items are just gone. Not in inventory, not in chest, just gone.
Losing a map is particularly aggravating. This has happened twice now: I craft a map, zoom to step 4 (largest scale map), and map the entire area. Then place the map in a chest. When I next start the game, the map is missing. But I noticed it isn't just a map; all items I placed in the chest are gone. I had placed a torch and waited to hear the "thud" to confirm the server thread had sync'ed. This is single player, survival mode, and the latest version: Minecraft 1.8.3. I am not using a server; what I mean by "server thread" is the internal server of single player mode. But despite my caution, everything I placed in the chest is just gone. Help!
