All of the sudden, I have been getting "out of memory" GL errors even though when I hit f3 it only says I have about 40% of the allocated memory. My Minecraft does not bring up the "Out of memory!" Screen, just displays an error in chat stating "Error 1285: Out of memory." Then basically I have to restart my game.
These things dont happen very often, and seem to happen a lot more on certain servers than others. For example, I have never gotten that error message in my survival world, but at one specific area on a server I play on I get them all the time. However, it is only in that area, and I can play fine on the rest of the server.
I have not installed anything recently, and have 1 GB of RAM allocated to Minecraft. I am using no mods except Optifine (if that counts) and Minecraft runs fine otherwise.

If you have 32bit Java and have forced Xms to 1G then you may not have left enough memory outside the heap.
If you can use 64bit Java you should do that, otherwise leave the memory allocations to the defaults. (Xms512m)
I do have 64 bit java, I will look into running Minecraft with 64 bit instead of 32 bit
