I've recently added Ubuntu 14.04 onto my laptop, (I recently screwed up hard drive partitioning)
and after spending some time downloading things I'm left with this when I press play.

ok, ubuntu has a hard time launching minecraft directly into fullscreen, so in the options.txt file under .minecraft (control-H on home) change fullscreen mode to "false" (no quotation marks)
if that doesnt work, ill try something else
