I've got a bit of a problem right now. My 7-year-old little brother wants to play Minecraft with the foreign exchange student living with us. However, I can't get the LAN multiplayer working. There's a number of things that might be the issue for all I know, but since I've never set up a LAN connection before, I've got no idea what to do.
First off, originally Toni (foreign exchange student) was using a copied version of Minecraft with a friend's account to play. The first time we found that we could connect the computers together, that was how he was playing the game. Since then, he's bought his own account and everything, mainly just so that he could mess with modpacks.
Second, since the first time that the two of them had played together, I figured out how to set up mods for him manually, and I had created a separate profile, installed Forge, and added a handful of mods. Even so, when they tried multiplayer, they were both using 1.8.1 completely unmodded and using the official launcher.
When we tried to connect it today, both computers completely failed to even find each other on the network. We're both using the house's Wi-Fi, since my computer is a desktop in my bedroom on the opposite side of the house from the router, and he's using a laptop while sitting on his bed in my room. We tried having his computer as the host, and we tried it with mine, but both times had completely failed to even detect the other.
Does anybody have an idea why we can't get a connection working?

You will need to set up a direct connection with the host which involves some more steps.
Under direct connect you need to enter the ip and port.
On the host pc in windows go to start execute and type "cmd"
In the black screen type ipconfig.
On linux go to terminal and type ifconfig
It shows the ip. It should look like 192.168.x.x where x is any number On some pc's the ip for lan lies in the 10.x.x.x range.
On the client pc click the button direct connect and type the ip.
On the host pc open to lan. It will give a message stating on which port.
On the client pc type a colon : after the ip without spaces.
Then type the port number.
Ready to go.
It should look like 192.168.1.4:45217
Hope this helps
