How to update Minecraft to the latest Java version?

I downloaded Java 8 for Mac but Minecraft is still on Java 6. Is there any way to update the Java version Minecraft uses?

Go to the profile editor in the launcher, and edit the Java settings
In the executables make sure it says: C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\bin\javaw.exe
