I'm trying to play a PvP game on Shotbow but the game crashes in 1.8 so people play it on 1.7.5 but every time I try to log on to the multiplayer server it crashes the game closes on its own.
You have 1.8 levels of render distance set in your options file stored in your game directory. These large render distances aren't supported in older versions. You need to turn it down (using 1.8) or use a new game directory for playing older versions.
Which option? You can create a new launcher profile via the "new profile" button, then you edit the line that configures the game directory to be somewhere else. This is a good option for creating a multiplayer profile for each specific version of MC you need to use for various servers.
Or you can run start 1.8 and go into options -> video settings -> Render Distance to 12 or less.
Then you should be able to run 1.7 in that same game directory.

I'm using a Mac OS X Version 10.7.5 Mid 2011
Or you can run start 1.8 and go into options -> video settings -> Render Distance to 12 or less.
Then you should be able to run 1.7 in that same game directory.
