Ok, my minecraft wont launch, when i hit play, it loads, closes the launcher, waits a few seconds and then pops up with an error report.

Im running windows 8.1 upgraded from windows xp

I have already checked that and updated my drivers, but all mine are the most resent.

They are still the wrong drivers.
You have Microsoft's minimal support for an obsolete chipset drivers.

The only drivers that might work are these: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=18223
But since your chipset is obsolete, those drivers are for Windows 7. The last OS where your chipset was supported by Intel.
Further you will be affected by http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/references/intel-4-series-chipsets/ and not be able to play any version of Minecraft newer than 1.7.2
