Hi, so I have been modding my minecraft a bit and suddenly, I started getting terrible fps, but the only mods I had installed were GLSL Shaders (ran at 60 fps standalone), Parachute mod (ran at 60 fps with GLSL Shaders on amplified terrain), Simple Recipes (ran at 60 fps w/ other two mods), and custom npcs which ran at 25 fps standalone, but at 7-20 with all of the other mods. I set minecraft to high priority on my computer and set it to accumulate 16 gigabytes of ram. Then, I set my video settings to a medium state, but all of this didn't effect the fps drop at all. I did try optifine with all speed settings, but it still didn't effect it at all. (optifine also broke some textures so I got rid of it -.-)
Pc specs:
Geforce 750ti graphics card (contains 2 extra gigs of ram)
16 gigs of ram
1tb hard drive
650 watt power supply
With those specs I would expect a little more out of minecraft, but instead it chose to be a wimp on me. Does anyone know how to fix this? thanks.
Mods can significantly affect your fps depending on how many you have and what they're doing. Parachute mod is pretty simple, and except in the moment of flight, really doesn't cost you any fps at all cause it's just 4-5 items added. Custon NPCs on the other hand adds neutral mods each with specific functions which may be pretty complex. So that will tank it a bit, especially if there are a lot of NPCs spawned.
Simple recipes is again only a few recipes added to the game but something machinery related and complex, where you actually build complex factories and setups that at all times run and do something will also tank your game. So mods can't really be considered all equal.
GLSL shaders at 60fps is pretty damn good, about as good as it gets with shaders. If you're going to run a 160 mod modpack though, and shaders on top of it, you can expect trouble with all but the most monstrous of setups.
It's a tradeoff thing. Decide which you need more. Pretty shaders, great fps or many mods at once
In case you're convinced it's custom NPCs alone, you can try other mob spawning mods for pretty much same effect. Try Mo'Creatures or Orespawn or Lycanite Mobs or something like that and you'll see similar difficulties.

Thanks. The decision is going to be hard... The map I'm making is supposed to be interacted with as well as be beautiful, but I could just alternate it based on what I want to see.
Well generally it isn't but when you start assigning huge portions of your ram from a system that's expected to run with certain amount available, you'll run into issues. Especially if you assign more than your system needs for basic function. I don't know your total ram but if it's like 16 total, you assign 10 to mc and you need 3-4 minimum to function, plus you have a bunch of other apps open, you're gonna start choking.

makes sense. Kinda like biting off more than you can chew.
I said "can". This depends heavily on the shaderpack. Sildur's or Paolo's? Chocapic Medium? I can easily get those to smooth 50 FPS with my hardware, and I've got weaker GPU then you.
SEUS? 25 FPS max on Standard. Lag heaven on Ultra.
And you still haven't mentioned your CPU BTW. Minecraft is heavily dependent on the CPU, being Java and all. It's also a single thread app (pre 1.8), so it depends mostly on CPU clock speed. And no fancy multi-core / multi-CPU setups will help here.
I have intel i3 core processor and I can customize my clock speed. My GPU clock boost is offset by 50 as well as my memory clock, but my pc stays cool. I might upgrade my processor soon though. I have not heard of those other shaderpacks, but I do use ultra on the SEUS though.
Sigh .... this means almost nothing. There's probably around 50 different desktop i3 models with clocks ranging from mediocre 2.0 to very good 3.8 GHz. For modded Minecraft you'll need at least 2.8, preferably more then 3.0 to avoid getting bogged down.
My clocks are 3.5 GHz, sorry for the lack of info <:D
Install Optifine My PC bumped from 60 to 200 (though it does have Nvidia GeForce GT 755M SLI
I have installed several different versions of optifine (only using one at a time obviously) from the original website, but they all broke textures so I got rid of it. As you can see in the image below, the fps is still pretty bad even with optifine and the textures are as broken as they can get.
It does play fine up to 1290, which is the one used here.
And you're most likely using shader mod 1.8 alpha. If so, then rant ahead:
Shader mod 1.8 has an explicit warning in the first post:
Work in progress, unfinished, works with Optifine (not fully, expect bugs), works with Forge (not fully, expect bugs).
And in general: Alpha build, expect bugs!
It also explicitly mentions what has to be done to ovoid those texture bugs: Turn off connected textures in Optifine.
And finally: You're using SHADERS. With a, at best, above average GPU. If that's a SEUS shaderpack in that screen then solid 30FPS is the expected performance for a GTX 750 Ti at 1920x1080. Yes, shaders are THAT demanding.
How do I know it's shader mod? Because only shader mod 1.8 gets that particular texture bug with Optifine (also the fancy sun and dawn effects on the sky). And shader mod, being the GPU hog that it is, is something you should mention when complaining about performance. It changes the whole discussion.
Could be solved, but with the shaders mod disabled and only 1 npc from custom npcs, it was at 29 fps and there were still broken textures with the shaders mod disabled. Now, look what happened after I got rid of optifine and custom npcs: ( it was over 70 for a bit, but then it went down after it finished generating. over 50 fps is awesome for these kinds of shders though. This is why I'm convinced it is optifine and custom npcs)
If by "shader mod disabled" you mean no shaderpack loaded (i.e. the "internal" or "none" options selected), then no. That does not mean the mod is disabled, it only means that no shaderpack is loaded. All graphical engine alterations shader mod does are still present, which includes all of it's bugs. Also "none" and "internal" are pretty unstable options.
Also, you're still using 1.8 here which is pretty much in alpha/beta state as far as pretty much almost any mod is concerned.
I'd like you to check this situation:
Only Shader mod + Optifine loaded (no Forge, maybe chack later with Forge but nothing else). And thatn play around with Optifine settings, without activating any o f the known problematic stuff: AF, AA, Connected Textures. And don't overdo on the graphical settings. Especially Render distance, keep it at most 8. Render distance along with resolution is the biggest FPS killer, and most shaderpacks are designed to work with distance 8.
I'll try it out, but when I said "disabled" I meant completely removed it from the forge "mods" folder
That's fine. I just mentioned that because there's plenty of people who think the mod is inactive when no shaderpacks is loaded. When in fact the mod is pretty unstable without a shaderpack.
It ran at a solid 60 fps with just shadersmod and optifine, but the textures were still destroyed. Without optifine and the other two simple mods, it ran at 40-60 fps which is still really good for having the big shader.
And did you actually turn off Connected Textures as you were asked by shader mod author?
Oh... I did remember reading that, but I guess I forgot and got mad or something. Wow, I'm able to run customNPCs with all of the other mods active with 60+ fps! Thanks so much!

Dang I didn't know ram was so dangerous. setting to 4

I use a custom build, but I never experienced lag when just using the shaders
