I'm having an issue with my Minecraft performance right now. Before I get started, I would like to note that I have a gaming laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860m GPu, with 16 GB of RAM, and an i7, 3.2 ghz processor. I had recently gone on vacation during most of December, but I came back to my Minecraft launcher saying at the top of the window, that there was a new launcher that did not require Java. Seeing this occur, I clicked on the link, downloaded the setup prompt, and installed the launcher, rather than downloading it as traditionally that is what happens. I used the new Minecraft launcher, which honestly did not seem any different, and launched Minecraft but my performance was significantly lowered. Before using the new launcher, I would get 190-250 FPS (know this, had also made sure Minecraft was using the dedicated GPU, therefore enabling me to get such high framerates), yet after using the new launcher, I am now getting literally 49-50 FPS, nothing higher than 50, and nothing lower than 49. I checked again to make sure Minecraft was running my dedicated graphics card, as well as Java, as it is was runs Minecraft, but still I am getting 50 FPS. (this is all being done though the NVIDIA control panel.) The next thing I tried was, going into "Global Settings" and changing my preferred graphics processor, allowing all .exe applications to use my NVIDIA GPU. This did not work either. I made sure VSync was off through my NVIDIA control panel and in Minecraft as well but nothing is working. I have also ran GLSL Shaders with Sonic Ethers Ultra and gotten 40 FPS from this, so if I'm getting 50 FPS without it, then something is definitely wrong. Another thing is that if I try running GLSL Shaders with Sonic Ethers Ultra, I get my normal framerates which is typically 40-60 FPS, which means that my unmodified Minecraft isn't working. I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with my GPU, as I have also been playing Planetside 2 (a much more graphically intensive game than Minecraft) on all high setting and getting approximately 35-50 FPS, which is understandable for a game with such hardware demands. Below are some images showing my framerates, and my NVIDIA control panel settings. If you know why this is happening, please respond. Thanks so much.
1.8+ has doubled the possible rendering max distance from 16 to 32. That means if you set it to max, you can expect a huge drop in fps compared to 1.7.10 worlds.
Im having this exact same problem too, except my frames dropped to about 15-20 instead of 50 right after installing the new launcher. Its reassurance knowing that it might not be something on my end though, and Mojang might have taken a dump.
I dont think the launcher is a virus, because the download would have been removed quickly by mojang if someone did manage to get it there. I can recommend that you install optifine if you havent already, otherwise, you might just want to wait it out. You can also try to system restore your computer to before you installed the launcher.
Oh well. We'll have to hope for the best I guess. If this issue is occurring with other players the clearly something is wrong. Well thanks.
I got my problem fixed, it turns out that when I downloaded the new launcher it switched my graphics cards for whatever reason. Have you made sure it is using that?
